Later, one participant gets off to a rough start when she oversleeps the morning of the first photo shoot and is abandoned by the other girls, meanwhile, another wannabe top model is forced off of the set of a nude shoot. One girl breezes through runway training, but leaves a chilly air in the loft when her rivalry with another competitor escalates into a house-wide fight. Runway trainer J. Alexander is a guest judge. When the models undergo shocking makeovers, they are challenged to keep their cool while showing off their hot new looks during a photo shoot which requires them to dangle from wires suspending them nearly 100 feet in midair. When one of the participants contracts a horrifying, contagious skin condition that disfigures her face, the other models are sent into a complete panic and fear for their own safety. Later, at a shoot for a "Got Milk" ad, the girls are transformed into a different ethnicity using the miracle of make-up. One of the eleven remaining models is eliminated.
The models get a crash course in the business side of modeling by learning about contracts and are secretly evaluated by judges on their ability to handle themselves around industry insiders at a party for CoverGirl. Later, some of the participants are stressed out when they must pose in an intimate lingerie photo shoot with a top male model. Another model is eliminated.
The participants are schooled on the nuances of television interviews by "Entertainment Tonight" correspondent Jann Carl and one of the models struggles to cope with the competition when she receives shocking news from home. Rapper/ actress Eve and Entertainment Tonight correspondent Jann Carl make guest appearances, and photographer Johann Wolf serves as a guest judge. Later, the models must use what they have learned to interview famous actress, rapper and fashion designer Eve, while a photo shoot challenge puts the competitors on edge. While the girls visit a Los Angeles Animal park to study the movement of wild animals to incorporate into their modeling poses, Tyra surprises them with the news that they will be going on a safari in South Africa. Special guests include runway trainer J. Alexander and photographer Gerda Genis who also serves as a guest judge. Meanwhile, on a safari, one model fails to adhere to the safety instructions putting everyone in danger, while another realizes she has suddenly gained weight. Later, at the photo shoot, the models must each evoke a different wild animal, and, at judging, Janice Dickinson shocks everyone with a vivid demonstration of how to pose with "passion." The participants trek across land and water to get to scenic location for a photo shoot, and when they are instructed to create their own wardrobe using nature's elements surrounding them, one model dives into the mud. Meanwhile, in Cape Town, South Africa, the models are challenged to impress local fashion experts, and one model's fierce competitiveness upsets two of her rivals. At judging, Tyra turns the tables and forces the competitors to judge each other's photos, leading to some pointed and painful comments. Another model is eliminated.
The winner of a unique dance challenge earns a reward in which her strategic decision of how to share the reward causes hard feelings and one model's belief that she is special irritates the others and leads to arguments that fray friendships. Special guests include runway trainer J. Alexander, photographer Johan Wilke and South African clothing designers Bebe and Mandela, who also serve as a guest judges. At a photo shoot, the models must dance and pose with male models and one of the girls gets upset when she feels a male-model's intense flirtation crosses the line. Another model is eliminated, leaving only three competitors left to vie for the title of America's Next Top Model.

In their overseas location of Thailand, one of the models is suddenly rushed to the emergency room and the competitors participate in a challenge that requires them to perform an intricate Thai dance moves. The girls are taught about the art of self expression and storytelling and are later put to the test when they must tell stories of their own using their new skills. Later on, the girls go out but one model stays home sick, giving the other three the chance to gossip about her while she is absent. In their photo shoot, the girls are body painted and must use traditional clothing and Aboriginal dance to express themselves. While one model completely embraces the dancing, another bitterly complains about having to do so. Finally, the panel lights on fire when the girls are asked to give the name of the person who they think has the most potential at winning the competition and one girl gets verbally attacked by the rest.
The three finalists are ultimately put to the test in their final photo shoot and commercial for CoverGirl. Things do not go so well when one model struggles to look youthful in her pictures and another struggles to say her lines naturally for the commercial. After the CoverGirl shooting is done, one model is eliminated and the final two face off in the final runway challenge, after which the winner of cycle 8 is crowned.

Finally, the top models must work the camera in a fierce photo shoot that requires them to pose as gargoyles on the top of a building.
The girls get a lesson on how to be a spokesperson and later must improvise a sales pitch and divide into groups to create public service announcements for charity. The winner of the challenge gets to participate in a makeup photo shoot directed by Mary J. Blige. Meanwhile, the week's theme for the photo shoot is "green," which finds the ladies posing as recyclable materials.
Tyra surprises the girls and gives them an in-depth lesson about how to model in front of a moving camera. One model continues to get jealous and be very critical of her competition.
The models go to FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising) and are paired with a student designer to be their creative muse to design a dress.
When the models arrive in China they are introduced to their new penthouse suite, and one model who is left without a place to sleep becomes very upset.

They cruise through the streets of LA in vintage cars, while Tyra welcomes them over the radio.Samantha is bummed to be missing her prom, but she thinks it's a great opportunity to be here. Brittany B. just turned 18 and is still convinced she's already won. Turns out not only is Marjorie from France but was home schooled. She is worried she won't fit in with the other American girls. They all arrive at a roof to in downtown LA. Because there were three Brittanys in the competition, Tyra asked two of them to change their names. And so, Brittany R. is now McKey and Brittney B. is now Sharaun. Please make a note of it.The Jays show up. Ms Jay says, "For those of you who do not know, Tyra is from LA and got her start here, so we always come back to LA." Unless they go to New York.They pile in the bus and head back to the house. The girls run and scream and jump on the bed. Hannah is excited there's electricity and water. The house is decked out with pictures of Tyra, except for one hallway that has the winners of her Fiercee Awards, which she apparently passed out on her talk show. Jaeda from Cycle 7 won Biggest Makeover Meltdown, Norelle from Cycle 3 won Worst Walk, and Joanie form Cycle 6 won the Ugliest Cry.The girls bombard Isis with questions about her transition. She says she doesn't mind the questions, but she's just excited to be there. As she and McKey hang out in the pool, she explains transition is like going through puberty all over again.Meanwhile, Clark and Hannah sit in the corner and admit that they are uncomfortable with Isis. Hannah says she tried to convince herself she was okay with it but really she's not. But coming from a small town in Alaska, she feels she has the right to her point of view.Clark totally agrees. "Hell, yeah, if you walk around like that in a small town, you'd get shot. But it's not so much a close-minded view, it's just more traditional." She says because she's from a good Southern family she was thrown back by Isis. She thinks Isis has no place in this competition.Tyra Mail. This year's shot is a lovely 40's-esque picture of you know who in postal gear. "Tomorrow is going to get really intimate in under a minute. I assure you it will be magical. Love, Tyra."The girls head out to the Magic Castle. They are greeted by Ed Alonzo, the misfit of magic, and his two assistants, the Jays. After a few bad magic tricks, he makes Nigel and Paulina appear too.Paulina explains modeling is the world of illusion and they have to be many things to many people, but today "we want to see who you really are." Speed-dating style. Each girl will have one minute of face time to impress the judges.First, Sharaun meets with Nigel and tells him, "I am the next top model." He is not impressed. She says the same thing to Jay who replies, "Well, I guess there's nothing I can ask you because you have it all in the bag." Strike two. But she says, she's just confident but not cocky.Paulina asks McKey what she'd do if a director proposed sexual relations during a photo shoot. Mckey replies, "Walk up to him, punch him in the face, kick him in the balls, and walk off." Not exactly the answer Paulina was expecting.Jay asks Hannah, "What would you do to make sure we would always remember you?" Hannah says, "Be memorable." (As in, to the right.) Isis strikes a classic pose with a hand to her face. Nigel asks why? "I know the light is over here, I'm trying to follow your camera but never lose the light." Good answer. Nigel thinks Isis is the only one who knew her stuff but that there was something different about her. Hmmm. Guess he didn't get the memo!When the girls get back home, there's a big purple box in the yard full of model basics: two pairs of shoes, skirt, skinny jeans, little black dress.Tyra Mail. "Fashion isn't the only way to make a statement. Love, Tyra."Time for the photo shoot. They pull up to an old theater. On the marquee it says, "Vote here." Inside, Jay explains that the election is coming up, and never before has the younger generation been so excited and motivated about a presidential race. So for this shoot, they need to convince the younger generation that voting is sexy. All the girls who aren't registered (PSA placement!) will sign up today. Each girl will represent an issue of why it's important to vote. Jay shares that Tyra is so passionate about this year's election and has had many candidates on the Tyra Banks talk show so she really wanted one her favorite photographers, Mike Rosenthal. You may remember him from Caridee's circus shoot and the "smoking is bad" shoot.Marjorie is up first. Her issue is immigration. Some of the other girls stand in as extras. She is great. Jay loves her concave back and variety in posing. He says, "She tried things that were awkward and different. Very editorial."Brittany represents the military. Jay thinks its pretty.Clark asks the girls about her issue, bureaucracy, because she doesn't know what it means. She asks McKey but she won't tell her. Still confused, Clark gives the same little smile throughout her whole shoot.McKey is confused too, about how the environment plays into the whole "voting is sexy" thing. Jay asks her when she feels sexy and she says it's when she thinks about her boyfriend. So he tells her to pretend like she's wrestling him. As she starts punching the air, the shots look great.Hannah's topic was nuclear weapons. She says, "Obviously I understand they have damaging effects, but I'm just not sure how I feel about them." Okay.Elina is ready for her issue, foreign policy. Jay raves at her for smiling with her eyes.Isis reflects how last year she was one of the background girls. But now it's her time. Her topic is privacy and a few girls are picked to stand behind so their silhouette will show through the sheet. Sharaun taunts her throughout the shoot.
