However, one of his former victims, Lisa Howard, has tracked him down, confronts him, calls him "Ben", and threatens to reveal all to his latest mark, so he kills her during a struggle and stuffs her body in a steamer trunk, sending it to parts unknown, although we later learn she was buried in Sun Valley. Around the same time, a friend and associate inside the conman-now turned murderer's new milieu catches him in a lie, begins questioning the behavior of "Kohlmeyer" and becomes a bit too inquisitive for his own good.

A basketball team's owner learns his star player once threw a game. The player's shady brother-in-law (ironically, a used car salesman) has committed to a dangerous gangster that he has the player "in his pocket" and threatens to contact the commissioner if the owner does not go along with his scheme. In a physical confrontation, the much larger owner accidentally kills the other man, and the owner hides the body while directing his mentally challenged aide to dispose of the dead man's car after making up an excuse. Barnaby is hired by the now deceased man's wife -- who is the sister of the player who threw the game -- to try to locate her husband.

An ambitious young man working his way through law school (Jim Wayburn) who works for a bail bondswoman (Roxie Morgan), who just happens to be a friend of Barnaby, is tricked into securing the release on bond of a convict (Ross Kemper) in exchange for a promise of $200K. But it is all subterfuge and Kemper tricks Wayburn and bolts. Wayburn tracks him down and shoots him dead (after the other shoots first) and takes the loot Kemper had stolen and was on his person at the time of the shooting. Wayburn disposes of the body (although the audience is not shown how or where). Roxie asks Barnaby to find Kemper or she'll have to forfeit the bond. She does not blame Wayburn and is quite solicitous of him. Wayburn tries to fence the loot but Sven Rolly, Kemper's former partner in crime, whom he also cheated, wants his share.
S3.E7 ∙ Blueprint for a Caper
Clete Larkin, who works for an insurance company is beaten and thrown him down an elevator shaft by a disgruntled associate, sociopath Cam Wheeler, just out of prison "on a technicality". The police rule the incident an accident but Larkin's widow doesn't agree. She hires Barnaby Jones to investigate. Larkin had been providing a group of thieves with information on various clients so the gang could rob the clients. Wheeler, the newly-restored leader of the gang, believed Larkin was getting too close to Wheeler's girl (Gina Nelson), who is also a member of the gang. The tension between Wheeler and Gina is palpable. And there is dissension among the other gang members when Wheeler brings back the former way of dividing the take, under which he gets the lion's share. One of the other gang members, Doug Starrett, is outspoken in his belief that they've been doing all the work since he's been away and done well so they deserve a greater share. Wheeler doesn't agree.
S3.E8 ∙ Mystery Cycle
An insurance company hires Barnaby to investigate the death of the owner of a motor corporation who drove his motorcycle off a cliff during testing. After Jones hears rumors of an affair, and then learns of another mysterious motorcyclist in the area that day, he suspects it was no accident.
S3.E9 ∙ Dark Homecoming
A singer who hit it big goes back to her hometown to perform. She runs into her ex who is now dating someone else, and the girl he is dating is very insecure when the singer is with him. She confronts the singer, and the singer hits her knocking her out. Her manager who likes the singer tells her that she's dead but in actuality is not. He tells the singer to leave and he'll handle it, he wakes her up and he gets her out before anyone sees her. They talk and he wants her to pretend to be dead. The manager likes the singer and if can make the singer think she killed her, he can make her do whatever he wants. But she doesn't want to give the singer a chance to go after her ex so she tries to go back. But the manager runs her over. Her father then hires Barnaby to find out what happened to her.
S3.E10 ∙ Time to Kill
A jewel thief's carefully laid out plans to steal a diamond worth one million dollars are ruined when he is forced to kill a security guard who shows up during the heist. Barnaby is once again called to investigate by the insuring company.
S3.E11 ∙ Death on Deposit
Barnaby is hired to look into the mysterious death of a man who was planning to sell his ranch and move. It seems he was planning to withdraw his money from the bank. Meanwhile the banker seems to be dipping into the accounts and the man's plans threaten to expose her so the banker and her boyfriend killed him.
S3.E12 ∙ Web of Deceit
A struggle for a gun between three men leads to a deadly shooting. Two of the men involved make it look like the third committed suicide, but their cover up leads to a web of deceit and a cold blooded murder mystery for Barnaby to unravel.

Betty agrees to meet him but when she arrives she finds him dead of an apparent suicide. But the police tell her, it appears that he was murdered. In the meantime, the Tarkington Detective Agency is called by the insurance company who had a policy on her cousin to investigate. Now the head of the Agency William Tarkington IV, who is a pompous twit thinks Betty killed him when clearly she didn't. But he pursues that avenue and Betty also tries to find out what happened and she discovers other relatives who died mysteriously. When Tarkington learns of this he investigates and discovers that Betty has an aging aunt who is rich and that someone is trying to make sure that they alone get the aunt's money. And he changes his mind about Betty when someone tries to kill her.
