The Wurgels (Bruno, Carmen, and daughter Rose) are a white, liberal family from Santa Monica, California; and the Sparks (Brian, Renee, and son Nick) are a middle-class black family from Georgia. Both families get to know each other before they are made up as the opposite race for the first time.

Renee and Carmen get into an argument over a language exercise. Rose continues to participate in the slam poetry class in full makeup. Brian is hired as a bartender in an all-white neighborhood.

Carmen's "beautiful black creature" comment leads Brian and Renee to conclude that Carmen doesn't understand racism. As the friction builds between Carmen and Renee, Carmen turns to an outsider for insight into the black experience.

Carmen and her daughter are appalled at the chilly treatment they receive when they visit their own neighborhood in make-up. After experiencing racism on a regular basis for the first time in her life, Carmen becomes disheartened with Bruno's obstinate views.

Rose and Carmen visit Black Hair Salon. Brianna (Bree) from the poetry class volunteers to take Rose to her hair salon. Rose develops a crush on DeVaughn from the poetry class.
