The family talks about their dreams and what they hope to achieve in the future. Billy and Julie are trying to defining their relationship. Over breakfast discussions develop about working and what the individual members of the Boswell family do. None appear to have any sort of regular income except Adrian who is in real estate

Joey has to sit down and have a conversation with Billy bout the amount of time he is spending at Julies. As a Boswell, Billy has to contribute to the household like the others. The family is in an uproar after Granddad's canary is stolen. Joey is outraged and goes out on a mission to find the bird and punish those responsible

All the family is pleased when estranged father Freddie comes to visit - except Nellie, who confesses her loathing of him to the local priest. In the course of the day Jack attempts to buy ten stolen radios, only to find there are only three and the weight has been made up with apples. At tea time the kids admit that they miss Freddie, so when he calls they want to ask him in for a meal. Nellie sends him away with the apples and then finds he has stolen their money.

Joey confronts Freddie over the stolen money and learns it was to impress his girlfriend, Lilo Lil, who has now left him. Billy buys a car which is a rust bucket so he turns to busking to raise money but is upstaged by an opera singer. Aveline is asked to pose nude by a photographer so she calls in her brothers, who give him a taste of his own medicine whilst Jack sells a painting for a hundred pounds. At teatime Freddie returns with the stolen money and a lot more. He bought the painting from Jack and sold it on for seven hundred notes.

The family cannot afford the electricity bill so Joey sends Billy to the DHSS to charm the stone-faced clerk into helping but he lacks his older brother's persuasiveness. Freddie's brother Cyril, a ship's cook, dies and the coffin is left at the Boswells' house overnight. Cyril wanted his ashes to be scattered at sea so Joey charters a boat and the family sail down the river on it. However, whilst arguing with Freddie, Nellie accidentally drops Cyril's ashes overboard.

Bad news comes in spades for the Boswells as Adrian is made redundant, Joey meets with two toughs who inform him that Freddie owes them five hundred pounds in gambling debts and Jack finds he has fenced very hot antiques which he hides in his grandma's grave. Fortunately it turns out that he got them from the guys to whom Freddie is in debt, giving Joey very good leverage to help his father out. Now the only bad news is the fact that Billy has got Julie pregnant.

Adrian is still struggling with the concept of being unemployed. In desperation he goes to the unemployment agency and using the guidance of Joey he finally survives the experience. Concern begins to grow over Averline. She'd left for a big modeling job in Manchester and has not been heard from since. Julie finally goes into labor and conflict erupts over where she will be having the baby

Billy questions what he is doing and the lack of direction in his life. The boys in general discuss their various relationships. Joey promises Billy the use of his jaguar if Billy can prove he can come up with a workable plan to improve himself. Jack and Adrian run into trouble with some local thugs when a deal goes wrong. Joey tries to come to the rescue but the outcome is in the balance.

Adrian is put through the ringer when he attempts to apply for social benefits leading to a bout of depression that Joey talks him out off. Grandad is feeling upset to have always to rely on Joey whenever he wants to go out and Aveline reveals she has met a nice boy in London.

The boys consider the ramification of their father moving back into the Boswell household. Joey councils Billy about Julie, he forces Billy to think about what he needs to do to keep Julie in his life. Mrs. Boswell becomes shocked at her husband's new views on his faith. Aveline is mugged and her brothers arrive at the police station mob-handed to demand action whilst Nellie is over-protective about her daughter's welfare. Nellie is less than pleased to learn that Julie wants the baby christened at a Protestant church but goes along with it. During the christening Adrian's phone rings and he learns that he has got a job - but it is chauffeuring for two villains.

Nellie tries to get everything sorted for Grandad's 75th birthday. Adrian and Carmen try to take advantage of Grandad's living room. Joey is on a mission.

Billy is concerned to learn that there is damp in Julie's house whilst Aveline is rushed to hospital with a temperature. The family rallies with Nellie bringing in home cooking to make up for the foul hospital food. Adrian is scared off by a predatory posh lady whom he approaches for gardening work but Jack is only too happy to take his place whilst Joey discovers that Roxy is married.

Jack brags to Adrian how he reached first base with the posh lady for whom he was doing the garden whilst Aveline decides to give up being a model after a bad day on the catwalk. Joey is blackmailed by the gangster Yizzel and his sidekick into fencing stolen goods or else they will inform on him to Roxy's husband but he turns the tables on them. After a row with Lilo Lil Nellie learns that Freddie has thrown in his job as a council cleaner and stolen his dust-cart.

Adrian's girlfriend Carmen complains to Jack that Adrian is a hopeless lover before coming onto him whilst Joey unsuccessfully tries to use Grandad to get the DHSS to pay the family electric bill. After that Grandad wanders off and is discovered in hospital but the family has another problem when they learn that Freddie has been arrested. He is bailed to Lilo Lil but after falling out with her ends up with the Boswells.

With Freddie now staying with his family and the news of his court appearance being made very public Nellie has to face up to the scornful comments of other women in the super-market, though she gives as good as she gets. Billy is planning to marry Julie but the date coincides with Freddie's court appearance so an alternative plan is required.

The family attend court to give moral support. Billy does something that will anger Nellie. Grandad has a visit from a family member he hasn't seen for years and Jack is torn between loyalty to his mother and father.

Adrian introduces Eddie to Yizzel and his equally unruly mate, which is a bad idea because they kidnap the cousins, claiming that they owe them a huge debt. As ever it is Joey who rides to the rescue and sorts things out. Jack meanwhile becomes obsessed with his health and believes that he is terminally ill.

Jack discovers that there is nothing wrong with his health and he is so delighted that it makes him careless and his van ends up in the river. It does however allow him to claim on the insurance. Nellie decrees that everybody must get a job though she is unimpressed by Freddie's efforts as a hot dog vendor and, after arguing with him in church, gives him his marching orders.

Aveline, Adrian, Jack and even Nellie start at their new jobs but in each case they tend to make an inauspicious start. Freddie is living with Lilo Lil in a hut but disaster strikes when it gets hit by a lorry and Freddie breaks his leg. Joey meanwhile makes efforts to get back with Roxy despite the looming presence of her husband.

Joey gets closer to Roxy, who has left home after rowing with her husband Stan. Joey is keen to get back with her but Nellie is not encouraging given that Roxy already has one child and another on the way. To add to Nellie's grievances Lilo Lil brings the homeless Freddie to stay as he has broken his leg. Jack considers emigrating to America at last.

Nellie is missing Jack, who has finally gone to live in America and she can do without constant upsets, such as Billy having fallen out with Julie again and returned home or the fact that Joey has brought their Irish cousin Shifty, just out of jail back, to the house. He is a great hit with Grandad though because he brings him 'presents'. To make things worse for Nellie Aveline announces that she is engaged to Oswald, a vicar - and he is a Protestant.

Adrian goes for an interview to become a male model and whilst it is less than successful he is nonetheless given the job by Julian Le Mare. An apprehensive Aveline brings her boyfriend, Anglican vicar Oswald, home to meet the family, who try to be on their best behaviour though with varying degrees of success and it does not help that Shifty is up to his old ways.

Freddie is feeling under the weather and pays a visit to the doctor. On his return he claims that all is well but the perceptive Joey knows better and gets out of him the fact that he has a heart condition. Meanwhile Celia Higgins moves in next door, or tries to but is put off by the number of the Boswells' vehicles parked outside the house. She is in fact a former girlfriend of Shifty.

Nellie starts to befriend Celia, notwithstanding her past partner Shifty. Shifty himself allows himself to be involved in an insurance scam with Yizzel regarding his car, though comes unstuck when it is discovered that the car has no MOT. However Shifty is miraculously succeeding where the other Boswell boys have failed in managing to charm the icy DHSS clerk Martina.

Adrian and Billy decide to leave home and get a place together. Nellie decides to deliver their belongings to them and in doing so makes them realize just how many home comforts they are missing with the result that they are only too happy to return to the fold. Shifty, on the other hand, is getting on so famously with Martina, that he considers leaving Grandad's house to move in with her.

Word of Freddie's condition spreads around the family and they are all very concerned. Nellie tries to persuade them not to worry but knows that she is wasting her breath. Shifty plans to move in with Martina but Joey knows that he is only using her and gets him to break it off. Unfortunately Shifty claims he cannot leave Grandad because the old man is ill and Joey tells Martina otherwise. Adrian has a poem published but is arrested while celebrating.

Joey gives Freddie an ultimatum: He must choose between Nellie and Lilo Lil. Meanwhile, Billy goes to the opening of an animal refuge by Linda McCartney. He gets her autograph, they start chatting, Billy invites her to drop in for tea if she is in the area. Linda duly turns up and Nellie, unaware of who she is, tells her her troubles and asks if her husband is in work. Then Paul McCartney arrives to collect his wife.

Adrian has his first book of poems published and, to celebrate, he buys video recorders for the family. Unfortunately they are not as legitimate as he had imagined and he attracts the attention of the police. So does cousin Shifty, though for totally different reasons, as he has stolen a car and then crashed it into somebody's living room.

Aveline has returned home after rowing with Oswald about her desire to have a career as a model. Joey is seeing Roxy again and Nellie is upset by an anonymous letter sent to her regarding her son's girlfriend. She goes to the priest and then to the park for some time to herself. Here she meets Derek, a kindly widower who listens to her talking about her anxieties and they take a photo o each other.

Nellie continues to feel guilty over her friendship with Derek but keeps it to herself whilst Joey gives Roxy some money to help her out. Adrian decides to give Billy a lesson in diplomacy at the DHSS in order to charm the fearsome Martina but his technique is no more productive than Billy's.

Adrian meets a girl called Ellia and they go to the woods for a spot of romance. Unfortunately Ellia is a mischievous girl and she runs off with Adrian's clothes, much to the family's amusement. Billy finds an injured pigeon, which he takes to Grandad, who wants to build a pigeon loft. Grandad starts to reminisce and Billy is upset as he again muses on his on -off relationship with Julie. Nellie's friendship with Derek also causes her an awkward moment.
S4.E12 ∙ Episode #4.12
Freddie takes a turn for the worst and the family persuades Nellie that they should look after him but a battle commences when Lilo Lil turns up, stating that she wants to take him back to the hut to nurse him. Joey arranges to meet Roxy but somehow misses her though there is good news when Aveline confirms that she and Oswald are getting married, leaving Nellie to overcome her religious prejudices.
S4.E14 ∙ Christmas with the Boswells
Joey goes to inform Martina that the family will be holidaying in Rome for the Christmas period. She is not a little envious and, Joey detects, rather more than fond of him. The trip is supposed to be a honeymoon for Aveline and Oswalds but there are other romantic encounters, notably between the poetic Adrian and a girl called Magdalena. Nellie however is more than happy to be in the city that begat her beloved - if occasionally trying - religion.

Aveline is concerned that for all her and Oswald's efforts she has still failed to get pregnant and seeks medical advice. Adrian becomes an accidental hero and dines out on the fact whilst Billy, still pitifully hopeful that he can get back with Julie, is crestfallen to receive his divorce papers. Joey's mysterious job is exposed when he receives a letter from the tax man.

Joey goes to the tax office but to no avail as the tax-man insists that he pays up what he owes immediately. Billy goes to court for his divorce whilst a fretful Aveline wants Oswald's sperm count to be checked. All worries are however put aside when the family hears that Jack is returning from America and they go to the airport to meet him.

Oswald is driven to distraction through the sleepless nights caused by Aveline wanting to get pregnant whilst Shifty tries to get back with Martina and Jack buys a piano, which gets stolen. Meanwhile Joey feels that he has to come clean to his mother about the amount of money that he owes to the tax man.
S5.E4 ∙ Episode #5.4
Adrian agrees to help Jack retrieve his stolen piano, a quest which leads them to the business premises of the less than savoury Yizzel and his mate though they eventually get it back. Meanwhile Lilo Lil gets a job in service to be near to Freddie, who, having learned about Joey's problems with the tax office, sells his flat in order to give his son the money to pay off the outstanding sum.
S5.E5 ∙ Episode #5.5
Adrian is concerned because he has not had a letter back from Magdalena, the girl he met when the family went on holiday to Rome. Billy is concerned because he hears that Julie has got a new boyfriend and Aveline is giving cause for concern when she believes that her phantom pregnancy is for real. The only person who is not showing concern is Jack, as he has got a job as handyman to the eccentric Mrs Cumberland at the 'big house'.
S5.E6 ∙ Episode #5.6
Billy decides to adopt a cool new image in an effort to win back Julie but it fails to impress anybody whilst an increasingly desperate Aveline insists on Oswald taking a fertility test. There is consternation when the police are called after family dog Mongy is accused of biting a young girl but for Jack everything is going swimmingly as Treasure, the eccentric Mrs Cumberland, is paying him an excessively handsome wage.
S5.E7 ∙ Episode #5.7
Aveline hears good news regarding Oswald's fertility and Adrian gets good news when he hears from Magdalena, who is coming to visit him. Nellie on the other hand still feels guilty about Derek and transfers her guilt to Joey regarding him continuing to see Roxy. Shifty has a falling-out with Yizzel and his mate, which ends up with him stealing their car and fleeing down south to London.
S5.E8 ∙ Episode #5.8
Jack blows his wages and gets very drunk. Father Brennnan is visiting Nellie and so he is hurriedly taken to Grandad's to sleep it off. Nellie is still meeting Derek in the park but still wavering over the morality of it and asks the priest's advice. Aveline on the other hand is anything but indecisive and decides that a career as a model beats motherhood, much to Oswald's annoyance.
S5.E9 ∙ Episode #5.9
Mrs Cumberland dies and leaves Jack certain items in her will - including her dog, which causes problems in the house. When the dog disappears Jack goes after it, meeting the lovely Rachael in the process. Billy is still convinced that if he adopts a cool new look he can win Julie back whilst Freddie is alarmed when Lilo Lil announces that she has come off the pill and wants to make a baby with him.
S5.E10 ∙ Episode #5.10
Jack continues seeing Rachael whilst Adrian goes to the airport to meet Magdalena. Unfortunately there is a disappointment for him when it turns out that she spent the money he sent her for her air fare. Billy fails to impress Julie with his new image and Joey says goodbye to Roxy, who is leaving for Birmingham. Lilo Lil however is blissfully happy as she and Freddie take over the running of the allotment.

Adrian parades his good news - he has had a second book of poems published. Aveline is also riding high as her photo has now appeared in the glossies and she believes she has at last made it as a model. The good news is interrupted when Billy cuts his finger badly and has to be rushed to hospital.

Whilst Aveline argues with Oswald over putting her career as a model over getting pregnant Nellie confides in the priest that she is unsure as to continue seeing Derek or be faithful to Freddie. She is interrupted with the news that Grandad has been robbed of his money and furniture and the boys rally to buy replacements. Unfortunately Adrian, Billy and Jack buy back Grandad's own property and Joey has to save the day.

On Nellie's birthday Joey misses out as he is seeing Roxy, who has returned from Birmingham. Aveline bemoans the fact that she is now pregnant so may have to kiss goodbye to being a model whilst Nellie learns that Derek may be moving on. However she loves her presents, particularly a beautiful necklace from the boys, unaware that it was stolen from Lilo Lil. Freddie notices though.
S5.E14 ∙ A Quiet Christmas
Joey tries to help out when Shifty's released from prison, Billy's left facing the anger of the family when the Christmas presents are stolen from the car, the Boswell boys manage to put a smile on Martina's face, Jack and Nellie go out to buy the Christmas turkey, Adrian has a chat with Julie when she upsets Billy yet again, and Joey is faced with a difficult choice.
S6.E1 ∙ Episode #6.1
Billy is distraught that Julie has moved house without telling him, taking Francesca, but Adrian and Jack are both smitten by the new occupant, the sophisticated, older Leonora. The whole family rallies when their dog Mongy is killed and scatters his ashes at the Pier Head whilst Oswald has to play midwife when Aveline's baby arrives early.
S6.E2 ∙ Episode #6.2
As Aveline and her baby daughter return home from hospital the boys fall over themselves to help Leonora move in and Jack is jealous when she gives Adrian a job as her chauffeur. Joey rents a shop from where to sell the produce Freddie grows on his allotment but is dismayed to find that Lilo Lil is still very much in the picture.

Shifty gets a job as a bus driver though Nellie is unhappy with Aveline for giving him a reference whilst Lilo Lil tells Freddie that she is terminally ill and Leonora and Jack finally give in to their feelings for each other. Suspicious that there are family secrets Nellie is thus taken aback when Derek phones her out of the blue.
S6.E4 ∙ Episode #6.4
Romance is in the air as Shifty wins back Martina - though in his elation he drives the bus onto the motorway - and Jack continues dating Leonora. Nellie might disapprove but succumbs to another meeting with Derek after realizing that Freddie is back with Lilo Lil. Aveline and Oswald are less loved up when he accuses her of vanity as she yearns to return to being a model.
S6.E5 ∙ Episode #6.5
After rowing with Oswald Aveline returns to the family with baby Tracey Ursula whilst Joey finds that his shop has been vandalized and his produce stolen and Adrian is upset to learn that Jack is dating Leonora. Needing a break Nellie goes to lunch with Derek but draws the line at staying the night with him in a hotel.
S6.E6 ∙ Episode #6.6
Billy complains that the other family members pick on him so he moves into Freddie's shed, from where he is rescued by Joey, having seen that his father is back with Lilo Lil. Joey himself, having recovered his stock, opens his shop and phones Roxy to tell her whilst the now unemployed Shifty is given a last chance by Martina. Nellie decides to go away with Derek after all but the family, unaware of her plans, innocently manage to thwart her from going.
S6.E7 ∙ Episode #6.7
Nellie finally gets away with Derek, though they sleep in separate rooms. With Nellie away Aveline takes charge of the cooking, strengthening the family's view that she should return to Oswald. Cantankerous Grandad has a fall, fracturing his hip and is taken to hospital. Joey looks for a contact number for his mother in order to put her in the picture and comes across a romantic note from Derek.

There are positives all round as Adrian, in the money after his poems are turned into a musical, buys everybody presents, Jack moves in with Leonora and Aveline and Oswald have a heart to heart. The newly recovered Grandad meets old flame May, whose grand-daughter Irenee has an effect on Billy whilst Joey smiles as he spots Nellie in town with Derek.
S6.E9 ∙ Episode #6.9
Adrian is now dating Irenee and doing his best to overcome her lack of interest in culture whilst Joey tells Nellie he knows about Derek. He persuades her to invite Leonora to dinner but Leonora is uncomfortable and refuses. Aveline gets back into modelling but Granddad's memory lapses give the family cause for concern.
S6.E10 ∙ Episode #6.10
Concerned about Granddad's memory problems the family gets him to see a doctor but he makes a break for it and heads off to Wales in a taxi to relive old times, needing to be brought back to Liverpool. Jack begins to have doubts as to whether or not to move in with Leonora but Aveline and Oswald have a civilized meeting and it looks as if they might be getting back together again.
S6.E11 ∙ Another Christmas with the Boswells
Jack collects the last of his stuff from his room, Aveline joins a protest to save the Liver Birds, Shifty turns up after his three month sentence, Joey has to abandon a lady friend when Grandad goes on another walkabout, Billy asks for help to buy a new sandwich van, Lilo Lil heads back to the shed after selling up in Ireland, and Derek announces that he's planning to move to London to be with his daughter.
S7.E1 ∙ Episode #7.1
Billy meets a girl called Connie, which helps him erase the memory of Julie whilst Aveline, back with Oswald, is pregnant and Freddie is leaving Liverpool. Meanwhile Aveline, Nellie, Jack and Adrian are taken hostage in Leonora's house by vengeful villains whom Joey helped put away. Fortunately Billy scares them by bringing the police - or rather the police are chasing him for having an unroadworthy car.
S7.E2 ∙ Episode #7.2
Nobody has heard from Freddie since he left the message to say that he was leaving Liverpool and the situation is sufficiently serious that Jack intercepts Lilo Lil, who has come to the Boswells to ask if they know where he is. Billy has found true love at last with Connie but Adrian, on the other hand, finds the cultural gulf between Irenee and himself rather hard to handle.

Nellie visits a fortune teller for news of Freddie but is told to 'watch her back'. Later she is visited by Lilo Lil who suggests they bury their differences and try to find Freddie. The rest of the family plan a summer holiday at a country house but none of their partners want to go with them.

The heavily pregnant Aveline is spotted on the street by two men who want her to play a pregnant woman in their film whilst Jack, after a spot of passion in the allotment shed with Leonora, proposes though she asks him to wait three months for her answer. Adrian has less success when he offers Irenee a ring - which she throws away.

Whilst Adrian tells Jack that he will persevere with Irenee Nellie meets Derek in the park but collapses and he takes her to hospital. Alerted by the police all the children turn up at the ward to find that she has had a hysterectomy. As they are leaving Derek comes in with flowers and kisses her, calling her "My darling Nellie." The Boswells' eyebrows are raised.
S7.E6 ∙ Episode #7.6
The family discusses what they saw at the hospital and decide to act as if nothing had happened. However after Lilo Lil has visited Nellie and told her to put herself first she tells them all that Derek is her 'fancy man'. Adrian and Aveline are less happy, having been turned down by Irenee and the film makers whilst Jack, desperate for paternity, is unaware that Leonora is taking the Pill.

Whilst Adrian stays behind to have sex with Irenee the rest of the family, including Leonora, go for their holiday at the stately home.
