Jaime Camil and Pauley Perrette star in a new comedy about a single suburban mother, struggling to make ends meet, who finds her estranged sister and her sister's outrageously wealthy husband in need of a place to live after the couple's money dries up.
Jackie enforces the rule that all must contribute which results in Elizabeth getting a job at Neiman Marcus as a personal shopper. Believing that Elizabeth & Javier won't stick it out, she discourages Sammy from becoming too attached.
Jackie needs money for home repair so she gets into it with Derek, who wants more money for himself, and ends up quitting. Javier & Elizabeth find out that friends they had loaned money to in the past are in town and confront them for a payback. In the end, Mitzi steps in and makes Derek apologize and give her a raise.
Jackie & Elizabeth find some old letters revealing that their mother had an affair with "Alex." Convinced that Alex must be her real father, Elizabeth insists that they find him. Javier finds out that Luis has not been sending the pictures of him "working" to his father so he gets a job as a house painter and learns that Luis was right.
Elizabeth & Javier, determining that Jackie & Luis haven't dated in a while, decide to set them up on blind dates. Javier talks to Elizabeth on her reluctance to spend time with Sammy, resulting in her playing with him and losing her engagement ring.
Jackie gets upset when she finds out that Javier is taking Sammy to church. Luis invites Elizabeth to his spin class, which does not end well.
Javier decides to go with Jackie to visit her father in prison; Luis teaches Elizabeth to drive.
Jackie's angry outburst gets her banned from Sammy's soccer games and the coach quits.
When Jackie's ex-husband shows up, she seizes the opportunity to gain full custody of Sammy.
When Sammy's big idea for his school project fails, his family stays up all night to help him.
Jackie secures a liquor sponsor for the Cinco de Mayo party at Mitzi's bar, and Javier is thrilled to be the emcee of the celebration. Also, Jackie gets jealous when she notices Barry flirting with the sponsor representative.
Luis' dad, Don Dominguez (Cheech Marin), who works for Javier's wealthy father, arrives in town to test how Javier has handled being cut off financially. Also, Elizabeth agrees to help Jackie on a job and runs into her ex-boyfriend, Nick Murray (Phil Buckman)
When Sammy's birthday party location suddenly falls through, the family rushes to set up the celebration in the backyard and is surprised by an unexpected guest. Also, Javier and Elizabeth decide to look for their own apartment.
