Pathologist Virchow tries to uphold his liberal values in a time of upcoming nationalism. Doctor Koch continues his work on battling the rampant tuberculosis. Von Behring tries, in vain at first, to join his lab while Jewish Doctor Ehrlich is welcomed for his work on colorizing cells. Ms. Lenze recovers after an appendicitis but has to work off the fees for her treatment by working as a nurse.

S1.E2 ∙ Kaiserwetter

The liberally minded German crown prince, then Emperor Friedrich III. is diagnosed for laryngeal cancer. But both the diagnosis and treatment by the surgeons of the Charité cannot save him and he dies after a mere 99 days of reign. His son, presumptuous and militaristic Wilhelm II. visits the Charité together with his wife. While the Empress embarasses the scientists with her wisdom gleaned from illustrated magazines, the Kaiser proceeds to inspect famous doctor Koch's bacteriology lab. Koch is speechless, so Bergmann saves the day by annoncing that German science will gain "victory" over the French at the upcoming international conference on medicine.

S1.E3 ∙ Das Licht der Welt

The world's best physicians and scientists meet in Berlin for the congress on medicine. While all the doctors are there, Dr. Paul Ehrlich's wife has serious trouble giving birth. Young von Trautmannsdorf is off to his fraternity for dueling. Dr. Behring is the only surgeon available and saves Mrs. Ehrlich's life - but not her son's.

Professor Koch begins trials for tuberculin, Berhing rushes through his trial for a diphtheria cure, and Nurse Theresa falls ill.

S1.E5 ∙ Götterdämmerung

Professor Koch continues to test tuberculin as the results are called into question, Behring gets the opportunity to test out his cure for diphtheria, and Ida grapples with her future.

East Berlin in the summer of 1961: Dr. Ella Wendt is transferred from Senftenberg to the Charité to ensure health care. Doctors and nursing staff are leaving the GDR en masse for West Berlin.

S3.E2 ∙ Blutsauger

A newborn with jaundice from the women's clinic is announced at the children's ward. When the ambulance finally arrives, the baby is in poor condition. He needs a direct blood donation.

S3.E3 ∙ Grenzwerte

A seriously injured Curt is brought to the Charité, where he comes to a sinking realization. A suicidal intersex patient is referred to Kraatz.

S3.E4 ∙ Atemstillstand

A dead person is floating in the Humboldthafen. Ella is terrified that it might be Curt. Prokop autopsies the body.

S3.E5 ∙ Sepsis

Dr. Alexander Nowack was appointed senior physician for internal medicine. Ella knows the price he paid for it: silence in the case of the bismuth patient. After Curt Bruncken's leave and Nowack's promotion, she is disaffected.

S3.E6 ∙ Herzflimmern

Ella is supposed to represent Prof. Prokop at a research congress in West Berlin and present her latest results there. To be able to leave the country, Dr. Nowack vouches for her.

S4.E1 ∙ Ankunft

Berlin, August 2049. Renowned researcher Maral Safadi and her wife, gynecologist Julia Kowalczyk, return with great fanfare to the Charité, where she had studied. Now director of the hospital's microbiology institute, Maral takes charge of a man infected by an unknown pathogen. Meanwhile, the Charité is besieged by demonstrators protesting against a new reform of the healthcare system imposed by Minister Thomas Nguyen, in which Maral was involved as an advisor. Seda, the researcher's mother, sides with the protesters.

S4.E2 ∙ Trauma

After the death of a second patient infected by the unknown pathogen, Maral was able to establish that the contamination had taken place in the North Sea. The bacterium is thought to be very old and to have originated in the melting permafrost of Greenland. Thomas Nguyen, the Minister of Health, decides to ban access to all beaches. For her part, Julia tries to dissuade their son from enlisting in the European Union army and having a chip implanted in his brain.

S4.E3 ∙ Hoffnung

With the help of artificial intelligence, Maral realizes that what she calls "paleobacteria" can also exert a positive influence on the human immune system. She is convinced that she can save Piet, the first infected patient, by inoculating his intestine with the pathogen. But she has trouble convincing her colleague and the patient's two spouses to carry out the therapeutic trial.

S4.E4 ∙ Mut

At a time when the number of contamination is exploding in Europe, the director of the Charité suspends Maral for imposing the continuation of his therapeutic trial against the advice of his colleague. What's more, the experiment has had disastrous consequences for Piet, who is now in a coma. Determined to continue the research at home, the researcher puts herself in grave danger. Julia, who knows nothing about Maral's experiment, attempts a high-risk operation to save a pregnant woman whose health is threatened by micro-plastic contamination.

S4.E5 ∙ Heilung

Maral's therapeutic trial on herself is a success. The first patient infected with the paleobacteria is cured thanks to the new treatment. While the researcher remains weakened, she learns that Nils, her adoptive father, has liver cancer and had refused to be vaccinated against it. In accordance with the new reform, he will not be offered any treatment. While Seda is operating on Thomas Nguyen, a dramatic incident occurs.

S4.E6 ∙ Zuversicht

During the Minister of Health's heart transplant, the Charité server falls victim to a cyber-attack by opponents of reform, endangering a large number of patients. Shaken by the death of her father and the prospect of a break with Julia, Maral is offered a prestigious position. She also wins a major medical prize for her discoveries on paleobacteria, but surprises everyone with her speech.
