Sal Vine is married to the local doctor in the Devon village of Clatterford and works as his practice nurse. When her husband suddenly drops dead her son comes in to replace him and, to Sal's disappointment, wants his dumb wife to take her job, even though she is clearly too faint-hearted to stomach injuries. Sal finds herself being asked to help out unofficially so much that, backed by Tip, the receptionist, she 'persuades' him to employ her officially. A further problem is caused by her daughter Tasha, a divorced,ageing hippie with a little boy, who lives with Sal and makes demands on her. With such a family can the local Women's Institute offer an escape for Sal?

It is the anniversary of her husband's death and Sal feels that her children are not being sensitive enough. Tash is working in tele-sales - though not too successfully. Sal does manage to teach James to be nicer to his patients however. Plans for the Guild to create a website in collusion with another group are hampered by arguments as to who should build it and put the photographs on it. Delilah Stagg comes off her bicycle and ends up in hospital.

Tash and Spike set off for the Glastonbury festival, which Tash hopes to get into for nothing by posing as a security guard. Sal is looking forward to a quiet weekend alone but is interrupted by Susie, who believes she is pregnant after a one-night stand. Sal's efforts to get her a pregnancy test without anyone else knowing leads Eileen to suspect that they are plotting to replace her as president but Tip reveals that the man in question had had a vasectomy so Susie cannot be pregnant. Sal's quiet weekend is rudely brought to an end when Tash returns, having failed to get into Glastonbury.

Whilst Tash is out protesting with the druids against the Army taking over land Sal realizes that Spike the shambling hippy is ideally suited for her daughter rather than her admirer Marcus, and persuades Spike to ask Tash out, which he does - eventually. Sal organizes a ramble for the Guild. Eileen feels that it should have a theme but Sal sees it as a bonding exercise. In the course of the ramble they see the vicar entertaining a strange woman and he reacts awkwardly. The ramble is cut short when a fog comes down.

The annual reenactment of the famous Clatterford skirmish of 1646 is cancelled by the council on health and safety grounds so the Guild decide to stage their own battle with James as King Charles I. A real drama is enacted when Rosie is caught shop-lifting from the local Spar and her alter ego, the aggressive Margaret, comes to the fore. James is all for increasing Rosie's medication but Sal talks him out of it and, not for the first time, persuades Margaret to leave Rosie alone.

S2.E5 ∙ Match

The ladies of Clatterford Guild are to compete against a rival village, Hole, at netball, which Yasmeen has been teaching them, and bowls. They lose the netball game and almost win the bowls but Rosie gets them disqualified for indecent exposure. Tash has to choose between Marcus and Spike. She almost chooses Marcus but Spike's love poem wins her over and she agrees to marry him.

S2.E6 ∙ Wedding

After several setbacks and second thoughts Tash finally marries Spike in an open air ceremony in a field by the river. The wedding is organized by the Guild and Tash and some of the other guests are dressed as fairies. After the ceremony the couple, and Tash's son, go off in a mobile library van which they have begun to convert into a camper home. Sal breathes a sigh of relief.

Sal oversleeps on Easter Sunday, as she is drinking heavily and with some reason. Tash and Spike are still living with her whilst they do up their van and a barn in the field at the end of her garden is to be converted into a trendy dwelling, taking away her view. Initially everybody is supportive of her opposition but they all change their minds when they believe that the new occupant is to be Charles Dance.

Sal runs a surgery from her house for elderly patients who don't want to go to the doctor. Jock, who is in charge of the building works, gets the idea, thanks to Rosie, that Sal is a prostitute because so many men are visiting her. He tells James, who fears it will ruin his chance of running for M.P. He is no happier when he learns that his mother is dispensing medicine, though Yasmeen takes it well. All is cleared up apart from the matter of the vicar, who came to Sal for sleeping pills, nodded off overnight and is discovered minus his trousers.

Dinner Party:- Whilst Sal and Jock spar over the barn conversion, Caroline prepares for a dinner party for her husband's London friends, putting on a brave face over soldier son Christopher's posting to Afghanistan. Due to a misunderstanding Rosie and the vicar invite themselves and Caroline asks Sal along to mind Rosie. Other than Susie,the other guests are very late,due to rail delays, and Sal gets Caroline to watch her son's video message home, which produces tears all round, Rosie being the unexpected comforter.

To Tash's annoyance Sal and Jock start to get on. Eileen organizes a fashion show in the church to save the local boutique, the House of Mary, from closure but the vicar goes off on the moors with the keys. Kate finds him having a crisis of faith over the deaths of boys like Christopher and,Kate having provided a much-appreciated listening ear, they kiss passionately. The fashion parade is a huge success with Kate's new beau cheering her on and Rosie, resplendent in red, and supported by Jock, the star of the show.

New Beginnings. Tash and Spike are about to move when Tash's dozy friend Tish, who thinks that all vans are like horse-boxes where you use reverse gear to go forward, backs the van into Sal's house, causing some damage and injuring James. Jock, now good friends with Sal, is happy to do the repairs for her . Sal is impressed and goes to the gym to look her best for him at Tip's birthday party in the pub. Jock lets Tash and Spike park the van in the field.

Eileen is pleased to announce that Charles Dance will be addressing the Guild and hires a marquee for him. Everyone still believes that he is to be moving into the barn conversion but Jock tells Sal that it will be himself, he only allowed them to carry on with their assumption in order to get them off his back. Sal is very annoyed but relents when she learns that Jock has personally tracked down Charles Dance and is paying him so as not to let the ladies down. The famous actor duly arrives but is extremely boring, wittering on about almost everything in which he has appeared, though the ladies seem not to care, Rosie fainting in excitement. Sal cares even less as she and Jock stroll off together arm in arm.
