We are introduced to Pat Fletcher (Pam Ferris) the new boss of the factory who is determind to get the textile business back on track and make it a success. Unfortunately this is threatened by the instability of her homelife with her alcoholic, gambling husband (Keith Barron).
Grace is attracted to Faz, one of the few Asians in the area. But Faz's father does not approve of his son mixing with his white co-workers, while Grace's father is furious at the thought of his daughter having a mixed-race relationship.
Longstanding factory worker Freda seems to be finally happy, having started a relationship with Kenny. But when Freda misses out on the position of supervisor, she begins a vicious smear campaign against new boss Pat, which has serious consequences for the entire workforce.
