In 1995, a 14-year-old girl, Kristy Lynn Ohnstad, goes missing from her home in the Happy Valley neighborhood of Bellingham, Washington. She had been a student at Fairhaven Middle School. Located in Whatcom County, Bellingham is a scenic spot near the border between the USA and Canada. Law enforcement detectives begin their investigation of the missing girl, and uncover a grim family secret. In the end, her killer, Clark Richard Elmore, also known as James Lee Dickey and other aliases, turned himself in to the police. Clark Elmore had been the boyfriend of Kristy's mother. On March 12, 1996, Clark Elmore was sentenced to death for the rape and murder of Kristy Ohnstad. However, in 2016, a statewide moratorium on the death penalty was put in place so his execution has been delayed indefinitely. Appearing on this show was Mark Elmore, who is the fraternal twin brother of Clark Elmore. He shared his story of grief and heartache over Kristy's death. He does not understand how his brother could have carried out this sinister crime. Mark Elmore wanted to speak out with the hopes that he may be able to save somebody's else's life if people hear his story and talk to their children.

In June 2001, in Cortez, Colorado, the violent murder of a homosexual Native American Navajo teenager, sixteen-year-old Fred Martinez, Jr., means two spirits die with him. In Navajo culture, the belief is that to maintain harmony, there must be a balanced interrelationship between the feminine and the masculine spirits within the individual. So, both the male and the female spirits within the teenager have died. The Navajo word for "two-spirit" is Nadleehi. In the end, the killer was Shaun Murphy, age 18. He was a gang member and a drug dealer. The actual motive for the murder was never disclosed by Murphy, who was sentenced to 40 years in prison in 2002. However, in 2018 he was released early and put on parole, having served approximately 16 years in prison. At the time of the murder, Shaun's best friend was Clint Sanchez. Due to the fact that he helped Shaun to dispose of bloody clothing evidence, he was convicted of 'accessory after the fact' and sentenced to 36 months probation. Appearing on the show were Fred's mother Pauline Mitchell and Fred's best friend Robin Billings. They shared their stories of grief and heartache over losing Fred. Also appearing on the show was Clint Sanchez. Sanchez said that he is working to better his life, having given up drugs and fighting. Shaun Murphy was invited to appear on the show, but he declined.

Conroe, Texas: On September 12, 1995, 12-year-old Samuel McKay Everett was kidnapped, tortured and killed by "family friend" Hilton Lewis Crawford, age 56, who was hoping to extract a $500,000 ransom from McKay's parents. Crawford was indicted, convicted and sentenced to death. Hilton Lewis Crawford, now age 64, was executed by lethal injection on July 2, 2003 in Huntsville, Texas.
