Luce investigates missing memories at Sword and Cross reform school. Howson pursues escapee Cassie. Luce and Daniel uncover a hidden past. An attack leads them to a shocking discovery in a restricted room, hinting at sinister experiments.

Howson captures a hive-minded Outcast. Luce comforts Daniel while planning to get files. Penn's father's arrival helps them retrieve shocking records.

Miss Miriam shares secrets about Sword and Cross. Luce deals with Daniel's rejection meant to protect her from death, and disturbing visions of Penn dying. Despite Luce's warning, Penn breaks her promise to stay safe.

Mourning Penn's death, residents investigate a murder conspiracy. Confrontations with staff lead to Luce's entrapment and a library fire. Miss Sophia kidnaps Luce, planning a ritual sacrifice.
