Nell agrees to look after the Kanisky's home, as a special favor to her dying friend, and takes on the role of housekeeper to widowed police chief Carl and a parental figure to his three teenage daughters, and eventually a foster son.

When Nell goes to see him before he goes on a business trip and overhears a couple of messages left on his answering machine by women. Nell is insecure and when one of those women goes with him on his trip, she freaks out and leaves a message on his machine telling him she's dumping him. But when she learns that she's wrong, she doesn't know what to do. Julie tells Nell she should talk to him and apologize, which she nixes. That's when Katie suggests she erase the message problem is how does she get into his apartment.
Nell's stressed because she's being honored as the woman of the year and can't find anything to wear. Julie shows her the diamond necklace her new boyfriend just gave her. Nell tells her that she should give it back because she doesn't know him that well. She entrusts it to Nell till she meets him again. Nell's new boyfriend gives her a mink coat, which she takes and plans to wear at the ceremony and also wears the necklace. Later she gets robbed. And tries to tell Julie what happened without looking like a hypocrite.
Nell goes back to Alabama for her sister's wedding, where she clashes with her mother.
