Tom and Pippa Fletcher are a couple who, unable to have children of their own, foster five children and take off for the lazy beach community of Summer Bay. The children are a lively bunch which causes much conflict and general family feuding between each other and their foster parents.
The Fletchers settle into Summer Bay, which means finding jobs and drumming up business, but Carly is more interested in attracting Matt's attention.
Floss warns Bobby about her tarot prediction for the Fletcher family.
Sally, Carly, Steven and Lynn are attending school in Summer Bay for the first time, whilst Bobby also returns to school, after having her expulsion overturned, eager to avoid trouble.
The police rule the accident Martin and Lance's fault, but Fisher believes Bobby and Carly were involved. Frank approaches Alf for a job.
Carly can't stop dwelling over the accident she caused. Alf plans a romantic dinner to make up for disappointing Ailsa.
Drowning their sorrows with beer, Martin and Lance decide to get even with Fisher, not realising that he's gotten their jobs back.
Tom confronts Carly's father over his $7,000 payment to relieve Carly's debt. Sally acquires a new friend on the way to school. Celia spills the beans to Roo about Alf and Ailsa's romantic dinner.
Tom's resolve is tested when Sally and Lynn team up to convince him to keep the dog. Tom and Pippa interrogate Carly to try to ascertain how she persuaded her father to pay her debt.

The Fletchers get a lead on Lynn's whereabouts leading to a confrontation on the Pappas farm.
Fisher and Celia campaign to have Nico sent to a mental health facility, believing him to be a danger to the townsfolk.
Triumphant after catching Bobby red-handed in front of vandalised school property, Fisher can't help but celebrate the prospect of seeing her charged. Tom attempts to use his charm to change Celia's mind about Nico.
Pippa's pregnancy news brings joy and worry for the Fletcher family. Neville introduces Sally to his bagpipe "friend" Mr. Haggis.
With Alf having discovered about Frank and Roo's secret rendezvous, both Frank and Roo spark into damage control. Neville's on the warpath to find the culprit who slashed his bagpipes.
Upon hearing of Fisher's petition against Nico, Lance and Martin decide this could be yet another opportunity to make him pay. Sally is set to go on the run to evade Neville's wrath.
