We visit five island groups belonging to different countries. What they have in common is that they have all been penal colonies for slaves or criminals for a long time. What happened to the islands after the prisoners left them?

Guiana are the beautiful islands of Îles du Salut with one of the world's most notorious penal colonies. In 1848 it became a penal colony and in 1969 came the famous novel "Papillon" by Henri Charrière.

Mauritius is located near Madagascar. Slavery has left its mark on the island and the mountain Le Morne Brabant has become an important symbol of the dark times. Those who lived as slaves hid from their owners on the mountain.

Prison Island is now a national park, but there is still a prison in operation on the island. The interns at Pianosa work with gardening, archaeological excavations and run a restaurant.

Norfolk Island is located 1400 km east of Australia. It was once a dreaded prison island due to the harsh treatment of the inmates. Norfolk Island became a prison island in the mid-18th century and remained so until the mid-19th century.

During the 15th century, the Portuguese built an empire here. It was the beginning of the plantation economy, which was based on cheap labour. Santiago gained a central role in the slave trade between Europe, Africa and the Americas.
