Ida is alone with her little son, who is nicknamed Useppe. But soon the war turns everyone's lives upside down.

At the same time, the situation in Pietralata has become dangerous. The Germans behave increasingly aggressively against the Italians, whom they consider traitors.
Ida and Useppe find a room to rent in the district of Testaccio. Rome is starving under Nazi occupation. Ida moves through the city with the sole purpose of finding food for Useppe. "We are free!", the whole town suddenly shouts in the middle of the night. The Germans have run away.
Nino returns. He runs a smuggling operation between Naples and Rome. Ida starts teaching again. She hopes to get her life with her two children back again. For a while, Nino also moves in together with Ida and Useppe.
