Ben hates Christmas at the best of times but this year mother-in-law Grace is staying, Nick's hippy friend Alfie turns up from Wales and Susan insists on booking an expensive clown, Shingles, for Kenzo's birthday on Christmas Eve. To save money Ben asks Roger to play the clown but he gets drunk so Ben has to save the day. Finding an expensive ring Ben thinks it is a present from Susan - but it turns out to be from Grace for her lover - so he buys her a first edition of a Virginia Woolf novel at a grand plus.

Ben's rejection by a club causes him to join a secret society, Susan's favorite author visits, Michael pilfers to impress a girl, and Abi taxes Roger's limited Welsh.

When an old acquaintance turns up boasting of her perfect life, Susan is on a mission to prove her own life is better. Meanwhile, Ben angers cyclists with his rant on a radio programme, and Abi is influenced by the wrong chef.

Hoping to avoid yet another awful family Christmas Ben pretends to be ill so Susan calls his bluff and insists on taking him to see a doctor, which results in hospital admission. Meanwhile Janey is desperate to buy Kenzo the latest 'must have' toy and the boys take advantage of Ben's absence to throw a Christmas party. Then the news arrives from the hospital - Ben really is ill and his condition requires surgery.
S7.E1 ∙ The Ego Has Landed
The Harpers re-encounter the Mortons, a couple they met on holiday, and go to dinner with them. To Ben's surprise - and a good massaging of his ego - the couple ask him to be a sperm donor so that they can try I.V.F. treatment. However, when his results come through, they prove that he has no reason to crow. Janey is annoyed to find that Mark, Kenzo's long-absent father who has come back into the picture, has been married for two years without telling her and expects Kenzo to greet his 'new mummy'.
S7.E2 ∙ Four Affairs and a Funeral
Elderly patient Henry Phillips dies of natural causes in Ben's surgery, having confessed to Ben that he has a much younger wife Celia and a much younger mistress Stacey. Ben goes to comfort the widow but is mindful that he must keep the two women apart, in which capacity he goes to the old man's funeral. Susan, however, starts to suspect that her husband may be having the affair and, armed with her new mobile phone that takes photographs, follows him.
S7.E3 ∙ Once More with Feeling
Ben and Susan renew their wedding vows, much to Ben's disappointment.
S7.E4 ∙ Dutch Art and Dutch Courage
Susan is accompanying millionaire businessman James Garrett on an art- buying weekend and, due to an oversight, they must share a twin bedroom. Ben is jealous but without foundation. Michael has a university interview and Ben drives him there, stopping to buy him his first pint on the way. Unfortunately this causes Michael to be sick all over the interviewer.
S7.E5 ∙ Susan of Troy
Susan's mother Grace returns from her holidays having got married again. Michael gets the Harpers and Abi, Roger and Alfie on 'The Weakest Link' quiz show where Grace reveals on air that, in 1973, Susan got married to an all-in wrestler called Troy the Punisher in Las Vegas, though the marriage was quickly annulled. Whilst Ben and Susan argue over her little secret Alfie wins the cash prize.
S7.E6 ∙ One of the Boys
Charlie Briggs, Ben's old student friend, is getting married but it's to a man because Charlie has had gender realignment and is now a woman. Charlie asks Ben to give her away but Ben is lost for words so Susan steps in instead. Roger's domineering mother arrives. She plans to buy Abi and Roger the house next to hers, an idea which appalls Abi and Susan persuades Roger to talk her out of it for his bride's sake.
S7.E7 ∙ Abi Ever After
A party is held on the eve of Abi's wedding to Roger. Abi's mother gets drunk and tries to flirt with Ben whilst Michael and Alfie try to chat up the same girl. On the wedding day bridesmaid Janey gets dumped by her boyfriend over the phone and Abi has cold feet about getting married but Susan persuades her to go through with the wedding.
S7.E8 ∙ Breaking Up Ain't Hard to Do
The Drapers are amongst the Harpers' oldest friends so Ben and Susan are amazed to learn that they are breaking up. However this leads to Ben and Susan having their own domestic argument. Janey gets Kenzo an audition in an advertisement for breakfast cereal but starts to feel guilty when she thinks that she never asked if he wanted to take part. In the event the job goes to her instead.
S7.E9 ∙ Life Begins at Fifty
Susan gets caught shop-lifting an expensive pair of sun-glasses and is taken to court. Despite her protestations, Ben insists on defending her and putting her actions down to the female menopause. The lady judge is impressed by Ben's performance and dismisses the case. Whilst taking Kenzo to the park for Janey, Alfie meets a girl called Melanie and pretends Kenzo is his son to impress her. Janey is less taken with this idea.
S8.E0 ∙ Ho Ho No
Susan treats Ben to a Christmas hotel break supposedly just for the two of them, but she has secretly invited other family members, including Alfie and his strange Uncle Idris and Michael's left-wing girl-friend Gwen. Abi is also working as the hotel's masseuse. Crystal, a patient besotted with Ben, arrives to say her jealous boy-friend has escaped from jail and is on his way to kill Ben. Fortunately he is caught but Ben still has to face the rest of the family, though all ends well in a room full of presents.
S8.E1 ∙ The Parent Trap
Ben takes delivery of a neighbour's large, plasma-screen television and falls in love with it, but it seems that Michael's current love interest may be expecting a delivery too.
S8.E2 ∙ Let's Not Be Heisty
Ben's attempt to pay money into his bank unhappily coincides with someone else's decision to take some out... with the aid of sawn-off shotguns. When he decides to act as The Negotiator things look bleak for the hostages.
S8.E3 ∙ Cards on the Table
Ben's poker school is costing him a fortune, while Susan's visit to the fortune-teller reveals that something far more deadly is on the cards.
S8.E4 ∙ The Wax Job
Ben decides to sell his dental practice and takes up a hobby which he finds even more boring, while Susan's move up the ladder at the art gallery leads to more than one fall.
S8.E5 ∙ Neighbour Wars
Having run over Mr Casey's dog some years ago, Ben now compounds the misdemeanour by running over Mr Casey himself. Casey plays the sympathy card for all it's worth and it seems that it may be worth quite a lot.
S8.E6 ∙ Can't Get No Satisfaction
Michael and Alfie's internet dating doesn't go quite according to plan; and Kenzo's piano playing may leave a lot to be desired, but will Ben's attempt to get his old band together prove a bigger hit?
S8.E7 ∙ The Abi Habit
According to Susan, abstinence makes the heart grow fonder; while Janey looks like having it thrust upon her, for Abi, it looks like being a longer term commitment.
S9.E0 ∙ Have a Unhappy Christmas
For Christmas Ben gets Susan a present from the store where Alfie works as one of Santa's elves - a vacuum cleaner. Having been told this is unromantic he buys a necklace and is annoyed to find he could have got it for half price in the sale if he had waited a day. The family decide to get a picture of Ben and Susan on their wedding day put on mugs and other household items as a romantic souvenir, but, due to a mix-up at the factory, a rather saucier one of them on their honeymoon night is displayed instead.
S9.E1 ∙ Bully for Ben
Though not invited Ben tags along with his kids and Alfie to take part in the local pub quiz where Alfie notices that a member of another team seems to be cheating. Ben is ready to have it out with him, especially when the man turns out to be the school bully who used to make young Ben's life a misery. However circumstances conspire to put the bully in a different light.
S9.E2 ∙ Bringing Up Janey
Michael applies to join MI5 and Janey starts dating an older man, James, who nonetheless is rich and successful and the kind of son-in-law that Ben would be quite happy to welcome to the fold. However, when he is seen kissing another woman, is he the real deal?
S9.E3 ∙ A Very Brief Encounter
Whilst Janey lands herself in hot water by fabricating a Swedish girl-friend for a depressed Roger, Susan is visited by an old friend Margot, who is going through a divorce and wants to borrow a man to make her husband Phil, who is seeing someone, jealous. Inevitably she borrows Ben and they go out to the restaurant where Phil is - succeeding in annoying him. Next morning Ben wakes up the worse for drink. Has he really slept with Margot?
S9.E4 ∙ The Psyche of Mikey
When Michael admits to going to see a therapist but will not tell his parents why, they are intrigued as to the reason. Could it be that his apparently talking to himself has something to do with it? They decide to get into the therapist's office to look at the files. Alfie finds himself in the unusual position of having not one but two possible girl-friends moving in with him.
S9.E5 ∙ A Difficult Undertaking
Ben's uncle Norris dies, leaving ten thousand pounds - to Susan, for her support following the loss of his Mildred. Ben, also expecting a large legacy, buys an expensive suit but it turns out that Norris has only left him a box of old clothes. However Ben would seem to have a winning lottery ticket. Unfortunately it's in the suit that Alfie gave to Norris's son, thinking it belonged to the dead relative and Ben must retrieve it without causing offence.
S9.E6 ∙ Dog Dazed
Susan wants a dog but the assessor from the dogs' home deems her unsuitable so Ben goes to the kennels to sneak one out for her, only to find she is already there and about to call in the press as a protest against the assessors' decision. She then handcuffs Ben to one of the bars and leaves him to be her spokesman to the reporter.
S9.E7 ∙ It's Training Men
New patient Jessica proves to be an undercover spy for the Cavitex dental company and she feels Ben's behaviour warrants his going on a retraining course, along with Roger. Feeling patronized and irked by the presence of the Cavitex mascot giant bear, Ben falls asleep during a talk but on waking learns that there is to be an exam on all the facts he has just missed. Perhaps a little bribery is in order. Back home the family gets drunk on home brew.
S9.E8 ∙ The Guru
Susan, stranded at an Albanian airport, is charmed when a handsome American calling himself the Doctor rescues her and invites her to travel the world with him. Ben, meanwhile, has lunch with old college friend Jeremy, now a celebrity dentist with an international clientèle and a successful autobiography. However, after a few drinks he confesses that he hates his life style, envies Ben, and wants to discard all his perks. Can Ben talk him out of it?
S9.E9 ∙ Kenzo's Project
In a clip show to celebrate the show's hundredth edition Susan and Ben try to help Kenzo with a school project about his family by recalling some of their past exploits. Janey and Michael use the project to snipe at each other and Kenzo ends up bored by the whole experience.
S10.E0 ∙ 2039: A Christmas Oddity
It's Christmas 2039. Ben looks like an octogenarian but Susan, thanks to moisturisers, still looks middle-aged. Janey has ballooned, Mikey has lost all his hair and is resorting to an ill-fitting wig and Roger, thanks to an accident at the zoo, is just a head in a glass case. Kenzo is late in arriving, giving the family time to look back on some of their worst Christmas days ever, though the worst one of all time, as Kenzo reminds them, was when Uncle Richard came to stay.
S10.E1 ∙ Wheelie Ben
When the council assume Ben is disabled and send him cheques he tries to return the money but the clerk won't listen and Rosemary, the gushing welfare visitor who comes to assess him, is too busy saying how brave she thinks he is, to let him get a word in edge ways. She even puts him forward for an award, which he goes to collect. And then the other Ben Harper, the really disabled one, turns up.
S10.E2 ∙ The Son'll Come Out
Given that he used to have lots of girl-friends, when Michael comes out as gay, Ben is perplexed but determined to be supportive. Susan is just annoyed that Michael told Ben first. Ben's pride in his son's sexuality leads to his proclaiming it to a new patient - who just happens to be the homophobic, bigoted father of Michael's boy-friend Scott. When he throws Scott out it's down to Susan to save the situation.
S10.E3 ∙ Desperately Stalking Susan
Ben is appalled to discover that Martin, the benign elderly widower from next door, is besotted with Susan and has built a shrine to her in his kitchen. Whilst Ben has trouble persuading the police, Martin ties Susan to a chair and proposes to her. Ben goes to her rescue but ends up tied to another chair so that Susan has to profess affection for Martin in order to free them.
S10.E4 ∙ The Melbourne Identity
Craig, a young Australian, arrives at the house, claiming his mother was at college with Ben and Susan lets him stay in exchange for doing some decorating. Initially irritated by him, Ben starts to worry when it looks as if Craig could be his illegitimate son, especially as the lad starts dating Janey. Clumsy efforts are made to obtain Craig's DNA though the biggest surprise comes from Susan.
S10.E5 ∙ He's Just Not That Into Ben
To prove how trendy he is, Ben accompanies an embarrassed Michael to a gay club, where he gets chatted up by the adoring Rupert, who follows him home and sends him flowers. It's down to Susan to rescue her husband - and wangle herself a free holiday at the same time. Janey uses unconventional means to persuade the council to fit speed bumps after Kenzo is almost run over.
S10.E6 ∙ Slammertime
Whilst Susan is away Ben takes part in a police identity parade, where he is picked out as being a mugger and remanded in a cell with hard cases Carl and Terry. They hire their brief to get him released but later turn up at his house, wanting to lie low, along with Carl's wife Verity, who wants sex with Ben. To Ben's horror Carl wants to watch them, causing Ben to take drastic action - which gets him arrested again.
S10.E7 ∙ Ben Behaving Badly
When Janey has to sit with a poorly Kenzo Ben volunteers to look after one of her elderly care clients, Harry, a man who seems to have been around but is not allowed out else he will go walkabout. However Harry encourages Ben to join him for a night on the town - leading to Ben's performing in a karaoke, getting a tattoo and picking up women. Roger, meanwhile, has a smashing time trying to forget Abi.
S10.E8 ∙ Mary Christmas
Whilst playing Santa at Susan's works Christmas party Ben becomes emotionally involved when a little girl asks him to reconcile her mother and grand-father, who have fallen out. He actually succeeds, winning rare praise from Susan for his efforts. The Harpers are less successful, though, when their lavish New year party, with fireworks, a band and food from T.V. chef Ainsley Harriott initially fails to poach guests from nasty neighbour Casey's glitzy annual event. Can recent dental patient Rolf Harris save the night with his presence or will the rocket literally go up? At least Susan and Ben see in the New Year presenting a united front.
S11.E1 ∙ Janey's Choice
Ben is overjoyed when Mark, Kenzo's wealthy, successful father reappears and encourages him to propose to Janey. Susan, on the other hand, believes that Craig's feelings for her daughter are sincere and gives him her blessing. Roger, due to a misunderstanding, also believes that he is in with a chance. Predictably the parents exploit their championing of the suitors to score points off each other but ultimately it is Janey who makes the clinching decision.
S11.E2 ∙ Labour Pains
Susan gets an audition as a presenter of a pre-school TV show alongside a puppet monkey after a producer hears her reading to children in the library. There is however one other applicant - Janey - resulting in dirty tricks and neither getting the job though Janey gets the consolation prize. Ben forms a union to protest against time cards being introduced at work so his boss forestalls threatened strike action by giving him an executive post with Cavitex, pitting him against his colleagues. When he sees that he has been used, at least Ben does the right thing and resigns.
S11.E3 ∙ Accusin' Susan
With Ben on a course Susan works late at the art gallery with handsome young Chris, whose advances she spurns. Next day he accuses her of sexual harassment and she has to attend a course. Janey advises her on how to call his bluff but salvation comes via a far more bizarre reason. Michael confronts his old art teacher and accuses him of giving Kenzo poor grades because he himself did badly at school - until he sees Kenzo's paintings.
S11.E4 ∙ Germs of Endearment
Janey and Michael give their parents a Spanish holiday as an anniversary present but Michael has used Ben's credit card to finance it and needs to replace the money quickly so he contacts 'Cash In the Attic', finding that the only sale worth a four figure sum is Susan's beloved antique clock. Ben and Susan meanwhile find themselves in quarantine with a bore, a nervous wreck and a singing nun but show rare unity in seeing them all off. However, will they notice the clock's absence on their return?
S11.E5 ∙ Harper v Harper
Ben and Susan have yet another row after he refuses to attend her godparents' anniversary party so they decide on a trial separation, taking it in turns to live in the house alone. Ben moves in with Roger, ruining his love life whilst Susan overstays her welcome with Michael and his partner. Ultimately Janey and Michael get them back together by making them see that their sparring is what keeps the marriage afloat.
S11.E6 ∙ Relationship Happens
Susan drags a reluctant Ben along to a Keep Your Marriage Fresh weekend, where his anarchy and their mutual antipathy get them thrown out by the hippie in charge. Back at the house Michael gets dumped by boyfriend Matt, who is anxious to get to know Janey better but she displays family loyalty by showing him the door.
S11.E7 ∙ 'Booked
Whilst Ben is away on a course Susan is persuaded by Janey to go on the Facebook social network, which leads to her meeting up again with charming ex-boyfriend Paul Tremaine. He takes her for a drink and says romantic things to her. However he turns out to be a large scale drug dealer and Susan is forced to help the police trap him to avoid being charged herself.
S11.E8 ∙ A Decent Proposal
At Susan's mother's funeral, Arthur, the father who abandoned the family thirty years earlier, turns up and takes such a dislike to Ben he offers his daughter a million pounds to divorce him. Ben and Susan agree on the understanding they will remarry but Arthur dies on them, which is as well since he is broke. However the Harpers have already started divorce proceedings and must pay for them to be halted. Michael, likewise, does himself no good by pretending to be dying in order to date a young undertaker.
S11.E9 ∙ Darts All, Folks
Ben is approached by a man who remembers his father as a great darts player and asked to join the local pub team. However he is rubbish and gets replaced by a girl so when Roger asks him to join his team he is happy to sign up - and to use unorthodox means to secure victory. He also exposes Susan's young 'French' personal trainer as an impostor.
S11.E10 ∙ Susan for a Bruisin'
Susan gets depressed after a younger woman gets her job and she is asked to make a speech at a school reunion only because four other ex-pupils were unavailable. She decides she needs a more youthful image and opts for Botox. Ben is not convinced but fortunately the other attendees at the reunion have followed Susan's example.
S11.E11 ∙ A Night Out
Susan and Janey go out on a hen night only to find that the bride has been dumped, though when Susan persuades the groom to come and talk it over, it looks as if she may have had a lucky escape. Roger goes on a blind date though the woman in question turns out to be loud and vulgar so he asks the nice waitress out instead. Ben baby-sits with Kenzo, who locks him out of the house for refusing to let him watch his cartoon and will go to any lengths to stop him from getting back in again.
