Professor Alice Roberts takes a train ride covering 600 years of the Ottoman Empire. Starting in south east Turkey going to through to Budapest. Her mission is to learn about this vast empire that started with a dream in the 14th century.

Alice Roberts begins her Ottoman adventure in Adana, southern Turkey. She finds an historic mosque and meets some local experts. She takes a train across the Taurus Mountains to Konya, where she learns about whirling dervishes.
S1.E2 ∙ Ankara to Bursa
Alice Roberts is on a train to Ankara to visits the tomb of Ataturk who saw out the end of the Ottoman empire. In Bursa she visits the tomb of Osman, the empire's founder. Two cities and two leaders, 600 years apart.
S1.E3 ∙ Istanbul to Sofia
Alice Roberts arrives in Istanbul by rail to learn about how the strategic Ottoman assault to wrestle the city from the Romans. She also learns about the Ottoman's genius architect Sinam, before taking the sleeper train to Sofia.
S1.E4 ∙ Sofia to Belgrade
Alice Roberts is in Bulgaria's capital Sofia to learn how the empire was controlled from Istanbul. The city landscape today is almost entirely Soviet. After taking a train to Nis, Serbia she visits the shocking Skull Tower.
S1.E5 ∙ Timisoara to Budapest
In her final train journey Alice Roberts arrives at the western front of the Ottoman Empire, Budapest to find out how it all ended. In Romania's Timisoara she goes on a search for Ottoman remnants, after everything was destroyed ...almost.
