Arthur Wanamaker, a land baron based in Denver, is going home by train and when he arrives he is found dead. And a man who works in one of his mines is found with him. Jared Stone, the Marshall goes there and takes the man in. Everyone wants to hang the man but Stone wants to investigate. Stone is informed that because Wanamaker was killed while on a train, the railroad deems it as their concern so they send a Pinkerton Detective, Lattimer Finch to investigate. And he uses new methods to help find out what happened like finger printing and forensic medicine. Stone learns Wanamaker was a troubled man and there are other people who wanted him dead.
Marshal Stone tasks Det. Finch with finding if a man sentenced to hang actually committed the murder, and if not, who did. They are in a hurry as they only have a couple of days before he is to hang.
A body is found during construction of a new power line to town. Marshal Stone and Det. Finch must solve the murder quickly, so Mayor Smith doesn't lose the chance to have the state election convention in Silver City.
Marshal Stone finds a burned house with bodies of a man and a woman who have been burned and shot. He suspects an Arapaho brave as being responsible. The Silver City council votes to call in the Army to handle the situation as they fear another attack, although Marshal Stone suspects this is not an Indian uprising but something more personal between the killer and the victims.
