S5.E3 ∙ Bright Lights/Big City

Heidi announces that Tim is going to take everyone out for a night on the town. With curiosities rising, Tim finally enters the Atlas apartments dressed in a rain poncho and galoshes. The designers suit up and find themselves boarding a double decker bus. Tim explains, this challenge is to design a look of their choice for a night out on the town inspired by New York at night. The bus will be making four stops where the designers will photograph sources of inspiration. From destinations such as Greenwich Village and Times Square, the designers pull inspiration from the lights, movement, and city culture. The next morning with $100 and 30 minutes on the clock, the designers have their first opportunity to fabric shop at Mood and their first chance to really show who they are as designers. Once back at Parsons, they have until 1AM to complete their look.

Following a small tour through the city, the designers arrive at the Armory Track and Field Center where they meet US Olympian and five-time medal winner, Apolo Ohno. He reveals that the designers will have a chance to create a look for the US Olympic women's team for the opening ceremonies of the Summer Games. With 30 minutes to sketch while at the Armory's museum of Olympic history and its fashion and a budget of $150 to shop at Mood, designers begin their Olympic journey.

Heidi explains that the designers will be creating a look for a high-powered and glamorous, professional woman. With big names such as Hilary Clinton and Joan Rivers racing through their minds, the designers meet Tim back at the workroom who introduces Brooke Shields. Their next challenge is to work in teams of two to design a look for Brooke's character, Wendy Healy, on the show Lipstick Jungle. After having 30 minutes to sketch, each designer has an opportunity to pitch their concepts to Brooke who will then select six to move forward with their designs.

Back at the runway, Heidi introduces special guest Chris March-in drag to everyone's surprise. The next challenge is to design an outfit fit for a drag queen. They each have a particular persona and it's the designer's responsibility to portray that persona in the look that is created. With a great bunch of ladies to work with, the designers pair up and consult with their clients for 30 minutes. This is the designers' chance to feature something theatrical and truly have a good time going over the top, and it's all for a good cause: each design will be auctioned to benefit Broadway Cares Equity Fights AIDS. Following the consultation, the designers have a $200 budget to shop for as much sequenced, shiny, feathery fabrics they can find at Mood. Once back at Parsons, there is an explosion of color as the designers unpack their fabrics and begin working their magic.

Designers are challenged to create an outfit from Saturn car parts. They have just four minutes to riffle through mats, seat covers, seatbelts, headlights, visors, windshield wipers, and a myriad of nontraditional materials for parts that will best complement their design aesthetic. Back at Parsons, time becomes the greatest obstacle as they face a midnight deadline to come up with an idea, sketch it out, and then apply elbow grease to these heavy-duty materials.

The challenge is to create a look for Diane Von Furstenberg's fall collection, inspired by the movie "A Foreign Affair." The stakes are high to design a garment that will not only be part of the DVF fall collection but produced and sold exclusively for American Express card members. These looks must not only work into "A Foreign Affair" theme, but also express the characteristics of Dietrich - mercurial, androgynous, and seductress. The deadline is midnight to scramble for a concept, that is both movie-related and inspirational, and execute it.

Avant-garde in fashion can suggest the innovation and application of new concepts and techniques. Such legendary designers as Viktor & Rolf, Yamamoto, Jean-Paul Gaultier, and Balenciega have challenged cherished norms with new materials and fresh ways of cutting fabric for decades. These remaining designers must break new ground in fashion-their challenge is to create an avant-garde look inspired by an astrological sign. To do so they will be paired with an eliminated designer. Design teams have two days for the challenge and thirty minutes to decide whose zodiac sign will be the inspiration. Tandems pick a muse and then breakdown what traits of the sign they want the garment to exude.

Six recent college graduates stand ready to transition their lives into independent professionals-however, they need to look the part. Designers have thirty minutes to conference with mothers and daughters on the direction of their new look. However, the direction seems to be ambiguous as blood tandems clash in design aesthetic and style.

Rock, country, hip-hop, punk, and pop-designers must wield looks that symbolize one of the five genres, and their models for this challenge are themselves. The budget is a hundred and fifty dollars and the deadline is one a.m. deadline to create an iconic look for the runway. Quickly, the designers who have a real perspective on their specific musical genre distinguish themselves from the clichés of their competition.
