Nathaniel is kidnapped by the woman whose family was killed in a car accident involving Joe, Nathaniel's father, who selfishly and recklessly drove drunk. Sandra Mills is an alcoholic and struggling with life. Claire visits Darlene Jones, a prisoner on Death Row who she has planned teach to read. Dinah writes a letter to Darlene which Claire has to read to her, asking her to meet her before her time runs out. Dinah shares a poem that she wrote and Claire encourages Darlene to leave a special poem, letter, song or home movie to her own little girl and to set her child free of herself, while rejecting her own mother from the execution.
Dinah refuses to answer Josh's questions about rumors that she is sleeping with a football player, but Josh ultimately defends her honor when her friend Eric begins spreading rumors about her.
The Greenes stay with a family while Russell and Josh restore the home. Dinah sees the daughter throwing up to lose weight. She decides it's a good idea Claire catches her and makes her research it. Nathaniel and the son go "ghost" hunting.
Josh takes off to get Amber in Austin and runs into some trouble. Nathaniel meets a colorful character, with many "talents".
The Greenes to move into a vacant house rent free on the condition that Russell fixes up the place. They try being friends with the neighbor kid who has had a rough family life. Claire gets a job at the school and the locals are furious when Dinah gets special treatment from the principal. The locals look to get their hangout back by any means.
Josh is jumped while getting groceries. He is saved by a boy who turns out to be homeless and has lots of secrets.
Josh starts dating a girl who has a child. Dinah befriends an eccentric and kind of rude girl.
Russell volunteers at a local youth shelter, where he soon becomes the object of Amy, a teenage drug addict's, affections. Meanwhile, L.T. is given an ultimatum from his former gang member friends: help with a drug deal or live in fear.
Claire serves on a jury. When she convinces the jury the defendant just may be innocent. She must battle with her own doubts after finding out some disturbing news afterwards.
Shamaya has a stalker, who turns out to be someone from her past she's not to happy to see. LT is even more unhappy to see him.
LT and Shamaya's Dad is dying and now living in the house, causing more tension between the brother and sister. LT is living in the trailer with Josh and they are not getting along. Dinah gets invited to a costume party.
LT attempts to understand and come to terms with his estranged dad, and his anger at the fact that his imminent death will take him away from once again while LT and his sister Shamaya come to grips with the void left in their lives.
LT's new girlfriend is actually a narc; Dinah's boyfriend shocks her parents.
Russell risks losing a wealthy volunteer at the teen shelter, when he tells her to stop throwing money around and explains how the money could really help the kids. Meanwhile, Dinah and boyfriend Michael (Jesse Petrick) plan a weekend alone.
Claire worries that Josh's involvement with Bobbie could be a problem. Margot "Ashleigh Norman" is hit by a car and her mother's "Christine Healy" agoraphobia prevents her from visiting Margot in the hospital. Meanwhile, L.T.'s award-winning play is disqualified for its subject matter.

LT's friend, Jimmy, witnesses a drive-by shooting, while Russell gets an up-close and personal view of gang violence when he becomes a security guard at Claire's school.
Russell and LT try to help a young girl who is ordered to shoot a rival gang member or put her family and self in mortal danger.
L.T. and Vicki "Chad Morgan" pose as a couple in order to research and write a newspaper article on interracial dating. Margot struggles with her mother's independence. Russell and Claire disagree over whether he should become a police officer.
L.T. is assaulted by a schizophrenic man (Billy Dee Williams), who also steals his camera. L.T. then discovers the man was once a great photographer. Meanwhile, Dinah is worried she won't be asked to the spring dance, and Russell sees some police action.
LT meets a woman selling her baby to a dealer and uncovers an illegal adoption ring; Josh heads off to college.
