S12.E19 ∙ Garry Shandling/Los Lobos

Sat, May 16, 1987

In the cold opening, President Reagan's former national security adviser Robert McFarlane has an emotional breakdown during his testimony at the Iran-Contra congressional hearing. In the opening monologue, the episode's host, comedian Garry Shandling, talks about his wacky ex girlfriend. Garry decides to do his first sketch, in which his character is to return an item to a clothing store without the receipt, in the same breaking-the-fourth-wall vein as his sitcom "It's Garry Shandling's Show (1986)" works, but his co-stars in the sketch, Jan and Phil, aren't all that happy about it. Dana's recurring character Puppy, the high class professional cat burglar, gets a visit from police inspector Phil. Can Puppy resist acting like a dog to avoid suspicion? Next, Garry shares his problems with his abusive mother with a support group, who then decides to intervene with his mother Jan on his behalf. However, Garry isn't telling them the whole story and the truth turns out to be much more twisted and psycho-sexual in nature than they thought. Musical guest, the popular L.A. rock band Los Lobos, play their song "Is This All There Is". SNL's regular anchorperson Dennis Miller talks news including U.S. Senator from Colorado Gary Hart's failed run for the Democratic nomination for President in 1988, The PTL Club's reported mismanagement of funds, late CIA director William J. Casey, the Iran-contra affair, New York City's AIDS awareness cartoon campaign, the reported disappearance of 10 million Disneyland dollars, overpopulation reports, the Bernhard Goetz case and the Reagans. Dana as Jimmy Stewart then shows up to passionately talk to Dennis about the controversial "black and white film colorization" senate hearings. In an elite restaurant, Nora and Jon perform, in French accents, a spoof version of Judy Collins' song Send In The Clowns. Tracey Ullman's short shows what a terrible self-absorbed new mother she is and she pays an ironic price for it. Gary and Victoria, stuck in the economy class, become victims of their inconsiderate fellow passengers, who keep spitting on them. Los Lobos returns to perform One Time One Night. Finally, Dana and Jan celebrate their anniversary in a restaurant by fighting and verbally abusing each other until Garry, the waiter, intervenes.
