While the Ritchies, Jennifer in particular, are still struggling to come to terms with losing a child, a new tragedy befalls them. The cottage catches fire and even though the neighbors come to the rescue most of their property is destroyed. Devastated they decide to leave Strathblair forever. Major wins back Flora's affections, but as they're starting to make plans for the wedding, he's getting recalled to active duty to fight the war in Korea.
