Bob is offered an opportunity to televise a session with his support group, but he is reluctant to do it.
Jerry convinces Bob into going to Peoria to watch a football game that is blacked out in Chicago. At the motel, Bob feels guilty, especially when two women want to spend time with he and Jerry.
Bob & Emily have vacation plans to visit Mexico. Bob seems hesitant, but he says he is excited to go. At work, a patient thanks Bob for the session and whacks him on the back - throwing his back out of whack and in pain.
The pastor at Bob and Emily's church asks Bob if he can become one of his patients.
Carol goes on vacation and the doctors in Bob's building need a temporary receptionist. Emily fills in and everyone enjoys her - except Bob.
Emily's recently divorced friend moves into the same apartment complex as Bob & Emily. Marilyn meets Howard and Emily takes Marilyn to Bob's work where she meets Jerry. Jerry and Howard compete for her affection.
Carol goes to the hospital for minor surgery and she falls for her doctor who is twice her age.
Emily becomes certified to give IQ tests and has Bob take one. The results of his test show Emily's IQ is a lot higher than his. They attend a banquet for geniuses and Bob feels out of place because everyone acts superior.
Bob's support group becomes very angry when he decides to raise his rates for his sessions.
When Emily suffers a malaise in the marriage, she and Bob turn to a marriage counselor for help.
Birthday-boy Bob's physical finds him eight pounds plumper than he should be at 41, so Bob determines to diet and exercise away those excess pounds.
Howard's son, Howie is visiting. Howard tells Bob he and his ex-wife, Lois, are getting along really well lately, and he thinks she wants to get together again, but Howard's upset to find out she's getting married, and wants Howard's approval.
Emily's parents pay an unexpected visit to Bob & Emily. They're the opposite in personality from Bob; exuberant, joking, and over the top. Bob feels left out of the comradely with Emily and her parents.
While in session with Bob, Elliot says he needs a date for a banquet/ He asks Carol and they go. They both have a good time - Elliot asks her to marry him.
Bob has to go to work for one appointment on Christmas Eve and then go home for a small Christmas celebration with Emily. Events conspire against him as his patient has a break down, the weather turns hazardous, and he has to walk home.
Jerry's brother, also a dentist, is in town and visits Jerry. After a few days, Jerry is tired of spending so much time for him. Jerry turns inferior around him.
As Bob & Emily grocery shop, she runs into a former student of hers who's now grown, with a job, and entering college, which makes her feel old, and unattractive. Then Bob gives Emily a blender as an anniversary gift. Emily becomes upset, with Bob's impersonal gift, so, Emily decides to change her appearance, and look 'youthful'.
Bob starts a therapy group for the unemployed. Howard is laid off from his job with the airlines and joins the therapy group.
Bob gets a new patient on the day Howard's apartment's robbed. Bob's new patient? He's just-released from prison - for robbery, 'natch, and Bob's understandably nervous.
Bob learns that Jerry has certain luxuries like a yacht. Jerry attributes it to his business manager, Jeff. Jerry arranges for Bob to meet him. Part of his program is for him to be in complete control of their finances which means Bob won't have access to any of it. And he gives Bob $50 a week for pocket money. But when Bob uses it right away and asks Jeff to give him a little more. Jeff tells him that to give him the receipt for what he used it on but because he doesn't get a receipt, Jeff gives him a lecture.
Bob's sister, Ellen, is getting married and Emily throws her a shower. But things get complicated when Howard falls in love with her at first sight.
Carol has a new boyfriend, and is in love. Her new romance takes up all of her work-time, and she's not focusing on work. But, when Bob & Emily meet the boyfriend, they find him to be condescending.
Dr. Walburn's a therapist from the 9th floor, is seeing Bob professionally but doesn't want it known publicly. When he's called out of town, he asks Bob to fill in for him. Bob's first patient - of Dr. Walburn's is Jerry, and that's when he reveals to Bob a secret reason he's been seeing Dr. Walburn.
One of Emily's students wrote an great report for class, but she knows it was written by the father who wants the boy to be moved to an advanced class. The principal of the school tries to convince Emily to skip the child.
