Helen Graham arrives at Wildfell Hall. Curious locals draw reticent Helen and her son Arthur into the social circles of the village. With gossip flying, Gilbert Markham believes his friend Mr. Lawrence is secretly courting Mrs. Graham.

Helen decides to reveal more to Gilbert and gives him her diary to read. Helen wants to open her heart to Gilbert but he sees their relationship going in a different direction.

Huntingdon has abducted young Arthur and Helen returns to him. Gilbert learns Helen has returned to Grassdale and her very ill husband.
