Young Tom Jones was abandoned at birth and does not know his father. He falls in love with his rich, intelligent and beautiful neighbor Sophia. But Sophia's abusive grandfather, Tom's own adoptive father and a scheming cousin will prevent them from getting together.

Sophia has been promised to Tom's cousin, Blifil. But Tom and Sophia love each other, and when they are revealed in the middle of a kiss, Tom is thrown out of the house. Tom sets course for London - hotly pursued by Sophia, who runs away just before her wedding.

All hope of getting together with Sophia seems lost for Tom, so Tom allows himself to be seduced by her aunt, the beguiling, dangerous Lady Bellaston. And Lady Bellaston doesn't like rivals, so she persuades a bachelor to cure Sophia.

Tom seeks out Sophia again, but he has given up all hope of winning her back. Lady Bellaston retaliates by revealing their affair to Sophia. Later, Tom is put in jail for injuring Fitzpatrick in a fight. Can anything save him from the gallows?
