Self-destructive musician Lucky hasn't spoken to his family in years, but he packs up his battered old piano for a 4,000-mile road trip across Australia when he hears his estranged mother is dying.
Lucky struggles without his anxiety medication. While waiting for a chemist to open in Port Agusta, Meg picks a fight with bikers at the pub.
Meg is beside herself when she loses all of her's and Lucky's money. To make matters worse, they then run out of petrol.
Meg and Lucky join a campground party on the Great Australian Bight, but the night takes a horrible turn when Lucky discovers a suicide note.
Lucky contemplates giving up when Meg runs away with the ute and the piano, but a potentially poisonous snakebite makes him change his mind.

After dropping Meg at her mother house in Kalgoorlie, Lucky gets a phone call from Megs father, worried sick about his daughter's whereabouts. Upon learning that Meg doesn't have a mother, Lucky frantically drives back to town to find her.
Lucky has a touching reunion with his mother, but his homecoming gets a much frostier reception from his brother Toby.
